“Risk Management Strategies of Clinical Supervision”
CEU Information:
This course fulfills the requirements for the Supervisor Refresher course for counselors and social workers. For mental health professionals requiring ethics training, the course provides 5.0 ethics hours.
Program Description:
While supervision remains an important and rewarding collegial activity, it no longer can be relegated to a relatively safe activity with a low liability risk. There are numerous ethical and legal responsibilities supervisors have to oversee to consistently ensure client welfare, promote supervisees’ professional development, implement institutional policies and protect the safety of the general public. As licensing boards institute supervision requirements and standards, supervisors become increasingly more liable for these responsibilities. Wading through legal jargon and precedent, ethical principles and codes, and the numerous practice standards can be overwhelming to say the least. The presenters call upon their many years as accomplished supervisors along with the latest literature and research to provide an engaging and valuable workshop. They will identify and review many of the common ethical and legal risks associated with clinical supervision and present practical risk management strategies to prevent lawsuits and board complaints. If you are a supervisor, thinking about becoming a supervisor, or a supervisee you won’t want to miss this workshop.
Objectives: By the end of the workshop, participants will . . .
- Understand the ethical risks of supervision and the skills required in the multiple roles of a supervisor.
- Determine the legal risks of supervision with particular attention to various forms of liability/malpractice.
- Demonstrate practical application of the ten risk management strategies of supervision in order to prevent lawsuits and licensing board complaints.
